EL FUTURO DE CUBA

Cuando se trata de la realidad cubana las coincidencias no existen y los hechos mas que excepciones son norma. En dos oportunidades distintas despidiendo opositores que regresaban a la isla encontre en el aeropuerto de Miami a personeros del regimen que habian estado en Estados Unidos de manera extraoficial; hablo de Nancy Morejon y de Zuleica Romay, ambas negras, mujeres e identificadas con el regimen. Esto ocurrio en el mismo periodo en que tres intelecuatles negros cubanos habian realizado un amplio programa de eventos y contactos con el objetivo de poner sobre el tapete la necesidad de alcanzar la verdadera e impostergable integracion racial sin la que Cuba corre el riesgo de precipitar a un conflicto fraticida. Pero la estrategia del regimen parece ir mucho mas alla del tema racial y de tres o cuatro medidas cosmeticas.

A mi juicio Raul Castro esta dispuesto a hacer lo que sea necesario para terminar su vida en paz y, eventualmente, asegurar a familiares y seguidores mas cercanos un futuro dorado; el general esta conciente de que el comunismo no funciona, de que Cuba jamas llegara a niveles aceptables de desarrollo por la via que sigue y que la transformacion del sistema ocurrira mas alla de su voluntad; de tal suerte, si en el pais debe haber oposicion el prepara SU oposicion, si debe haber lideres negros que protagonicen la armonizacion racial el prepara SUS lideres negros; si el reconocimiento de la propiedad privada esta al doblar de la esquina el prepara SU propiedad privada y la de su grupito dando carcater legal a la ilegitima apropiacion de cuanto bien colectivo le quepa en el saco; la hora de la "pinata" ha llegado y el menor del los Castro ha dado un hilo de la misma a cada persona de su sequito.

De este lado del estrecho la administracion no ve la hora de que el regimen termine de atar cabos para premiarlo con el levantamiento del embargo y de la prohibicion de viajes para los americanos que no son de origen cubano y no hay que criticarselo, su trabajo es asegurar estabilidad y tranquilidad y esto es mas facil de garantizar con un gobierno solido que con un estado basado en innumerables partidos politicos sin verdadero control sobre el ejercito y las instituciones. Ademas, Washington ve con esperanza el acercamiento que parece estar ocurriendo entre un sector del mundo empresarial cubano americano y las autoridades de La Habana y aqui creo que muchos hemos sido en extremo sentimentalistas e historicamente injustos: cuando se publico la noticia de que Franjul habia visitado su pais de origen lanzamos todo tipo de improperios contra el magnate olvidando dos aspectos escenciales: 1- los empresarios no piensan en justicia o injusticia sino en perdida o ganancia y en este momento de saturacion de mercados encontrarse de pronto con un voraz universo de 11 millones de seres humanos que no tienen nada de nada es el regalo mas hermoso que se le pueda hacer a un hombre de negocios, pero mas importante aun, 2- donde estaban estas voces de protesta del pueblo cuando Castro confisco y arrebato sus bienes a los empresarios cubanos?, pretendemos que los ricachones salgan en defensa de un pueblo envidioso y ebrio de retorica que les vio sufrir sin mover un dedo para defenderles. La enorme mayoria del pueblo aposto a la carta de la revolucion y perdio es imperativo sacar las conclusiones pertinentes sin culpar nadie de nuestros propios errores ni pedir peras al olmo

Para aquellos que sonabamos con la rendicion incondicional del castrismo y la implantacion de un regimen basado en leyes e instituciones verdaderas la situacion no pinta muy prometedora; lo mas probable es que el reciclaje de figuras apenas iniciado tenga exito y un dia nos despertemos con la noticia de que el cambio ya ocurrio, la participacion popular sera minima y el estado actual de cosas ira dando paso a uno nuevo sin castigo de culpables ni reinvindicacion de derechos; la victima de siempre continuara siendolo mas que nunca y poco a poco las ansias de libertad se iran conviertiendo en un empolvado recuerdo empanado por la necesidad de "resolver" y de hacer "baros".

El exilio habra perdido una gran oportunidad y se mantendra cabizbajo soportando el desden del regimen hasta que este decida darnos alguna limosna y en caso que las condiciones economicas mejoren es posible que los de "adentro" abandonden una vez mas a los de fuera y perdamos todo el protagnismo que una vez pudimos tener

No obstante, es objetivo senalar que en todo plan hay margen al error; que una cosa es la impunidad del comunismo y otra el embate de una prensa libre o seudo libre. El escenario que acabo de describir implica inevitablemente la perdida del control absoluto por parte de los gobernantes actuales y no es lo mismo Juan que el aliado de Juan, ni es lo mismo Pedro que el hombre de confianza de Pedro; una vez que un mayor grado de libertad, por mediatizada que pueda ser, irrumpa en la isla nadie puede asegurar que los designios raulistas sigan el curso trazado al pie de la letra y las cosas pudieran complicarse para el general y sus acolitos en la segunda mitad del noveno y con dos outs

UNA OPORTUNA ADVERTENCIA

Cuando se usa el termino cubano americano se hace para designar a los millones de personas que habiendo nacido en la isla antillana han obtenido la ciudadania americana y, generalmente, viven en los Estados Unidos de America e incluso a sus descendientes nacidos aqui. Los motivos por los que tantos de nosotros vinimos a parar al "Imperio" son disimiles y van desde asegurar un plato de comida hasta la busqueda de la libertad sin omitir la mera necesidad de tutelar la propia incolumidad. En sentido general el cubano americano guarda recuerdos mas o menos nostalgicos y, en muchas ocasiones, edulcorados de su vida en la isla mas alla de la represion, la escases y la falta de las minimas condiciones para llevar una vida decente. Todos de un mdo u otro conservamos algun recuerdo bello; alguna imagen de postal turistica, o alguna memoria de entranable amistad. Hasta ahi la inmensa mayoria de nosotros somos iguales. Donde se bifurca el camino es en la posicion que mantenemos respecto a la presunta fidelidad o, como nos dijeron a todos al momento de entrar oficialmente a esta nacion: "allegiance" y es aqui donde el ancho sendero se deshace en miles de trillos empedrados y sinuosos.

Dentro del cubano americano hay muchos que aun hoy piensan estar aqui temporalmente, de nada vale que lleven cincuenta navidades asegurando que la proxima sera en Cuba; siguen con estulta tozudez esperando por un momento que cada vez parece mas lejano aun despues de la desaparicion oficial del regimen; estan tambien los que no saben si regresan o no, pero no son americanos, no les iinteresa la historia del pais, ni su politica y lo unico que saben decir es que "la cosa esta del carajo...", pero ni votan ni tratan de cambiar el orden de cosas; luego tenemos al enemigo en casa, el que sin el menor reparo te dice, cito:"...los americanos son unos hijos de puta, pero si quieres ganar dinero tienes que venir para aca..." y existen muchos otros grupos de "compatriotas" por partida doble que incluyen a una gran cantidad de aquellos que no se sienten americanos, quizas no dominan a la perfeccion el idioma ni las costumbres, pero nutren un profundo agradecimiento y amor por la tierra que les recibio con los brazos abiertos. En un pais como este, lastima que solo exista uno en el mundo, todos caben; nadie tiene derecho de descalificar a otros, pero es importante precisar donde esta cada uno situado para evitar encontronazos desagradables.

Personalmente estoy en el grupo de los americanos a ultranza; de los que se creen mas "yumas" que el apple pie; de los que no estan aca por falta de alternativa, sino que luego de un periplo de casi veinte anos decidieron venir a reposar sus huesos a la nacion que menos se aleja de sus suenos de libertad y posibilidad de iniciativa. Soy de los que esta en contacto con esta tierra, con su idioma, su musica y costumbres desde la mas temprana adolescencia aun sin haber puesto un pie en su territorio; soy de los que no se llama a enganos ni idealiza al "Imperio" de los que saben que como toda obra humana Estados Unidos tiene defectos, injusticias y abusos, pero respira con alivio al recordar que existe una constitucion y un aparato juridico en grado de salvaguardar nuestros derechos fundamentales. Soy de los que critica todo lo que no le parece justo y apropiado, no para desdenar America, sino para que jamas deje de ser America; soy de los que pone todo, absolutamente todo en discusion menos una sola cosa: a quien debo fidelidad absoluta aun a riesgo de mi propia vida o de lo poco y destartalado que queda de ella. Toda esta perorata persigue un unico objetivo: hacer una oportuna advertencia a los "francotiradores" que no se sienten americanos y no aman a esta nacion con digna y orgullosa gratitud, a los que en lugar de la cruda y despiadada critica constructiva y ciudadana lanzan la desdenosa, renegada e ingrata calumnia sin saber a penas donde estan; estas personas y yo tenemos un grave problema personal y es mejor que lean detenidamente estas lineas antes de solicitar mi amistad por Facebook o por cualquier otro canal. No vine en el Mayflower ni mucho menos, pero vine tan pronto como pude; cada cual es dueno de pensar como desee, pero quien ofenda a los Estados Unidos de America me ofende y recibira la respuesta pertinente.

THREE YEARS BEFORE THE DEADLINE

A super PAC  has just been put together to catapult Hillary Clinton to the White House. The good news about such move so early in the game is that at least in appearance this could mean the incumbent won't have the nerve to try and change the constitution in order to go for a third term and that America's democracy won't be subverted after all. But on the dark side it reminds us of how distorted and ill our political system has become. Politicians devote hundreds of hours and millions of dollars to get elected and no sooner are they in power than they start all over again wasting so much precious time that could be used doing their real job. The damned thing is a circus and it needs urgent repair only that we the people seem not to have the will nor the guts to take back our destiny and talk some sense into these bureaucrats' minds.

For all his traveling and posturing our current president is an embattled politician who can hardly cope with four scandals and the power grabbing that has already begun in his party in view of the 2016 election, not to mention the midterm contest in 2014; his ratings are at the lowest so far and his supporters will inevitably start breaking ranks as the next chapter of this "comedy" draws nearer. This is precisely the moment when the people of this country should demand a change and make sure we steer the vessel to a new and more steady course. On the other side the republican party is still struggling to find a leader, it seems to be a bunch of old farts in need of a shrink instead of a political organization; this weakness in the political scenario is ideal for a move on the people's side, but we don't seem to be willing nor able to seize the moment. As I always say: no politician will bestow upon us any rights we haven't handsomely earned. Do we have what it takes to earn our rights back?

TWO QUICK THINGS

Former president Bush 43 made a comment on the NSA scandal; it was one of his rare public statements since he has adopted the dignified position of letting the incumbent do his job. Actually his comment was in support of the president. I don't agree with Mr. Bush, but I appreciate his graciousness.

On a different note, Mr. Obama broke his stubborn silence and told Charlie Rose that unless one has been in the situation room one can't understand what goes on there. Really? does anyone of you remember Herman Cain?; do you remember when he answered a question during the republican primaries by simply saying he didn't know?. Cain argued in front of a dumbfounded audience that there are scores of issues for which a president gets an answer only when he takes office. Ah but Mr. Cain was trashed by the media and derided by his critics both in his own party and among democrats; well now it looks as though the president had proved Herman Cain right; only there's no trashing nor floor mopping with Obama; how come the same answer is smart when uttered by someone in the left and stupid when given by someone in the right?

AS A GOOD AMERICAN

I wasn't here when the Patriot Act was adopted; however, as I watched from a distance the almost choreographic collapse of the twin towers in my mind over and over again I thought this country had no choice but giving up a tiny fraction of its freedom in order to achieve security; had I been an American citizen then, not that I hadn't felt as one for many years regardless of my zip code of residence, I would have supported the initiative in question.

In light of the recent scandals and what we've learned about practically being eavesdropped all the time with no regard for any of our hard earned rights I once again come to the conclusion that despite our best intentions when we pass a new law there's always room for abuse on the part of this ever growing tumor we call government. I have no remorse in saying that I changed my mind and returned to the American way; once you open a door your politicians will always find a way to push their weight through; so let's keep our freedom in a bullet proof vault.

Some may claim that we can't have both privacy and security, the president himself was quick to wield this argument; even some honest people say our government officials can't make miracles and we have to give them some leeway; the answer is an adamant and unswerving NO; we hire these bureaucrats to do a job and they should do it; we don't have to worry about how to achieve both privacy and security, they have to, it's their job and if they don't feel up to it let them resign and let's find more capable civil servants that are not so prone to take the easy way out. We pay these people not to bicker against one another in congress, not to waste our money flying in private jets, not to divide us, but to serve us. The message must be loud and clear: don't mess with our freedom or we'll fire your asses.

RICE, Mc CAIN AND GRAHAM

Susan Rice has been appointed by president Obama as the new National Security Advisor; this is the second Rice black woman in less than a decade to be in the position. On the left the appointment is seen as the least Mr. Obama could do after she had taken the heat on the Benghazi talking points; they all knew the video was not the reason for the attack but Mrs Rice did what her boss told her to do; anything to win an election. On the right, those who are not yet insiders may cry foul for a while, but there are two undeniable truths: 1- This is a position that does not need senate approval and the president can choose whomever he wants; 2- Mrs. Rice, although a democrat is hawkish in her approach to the US's role in the world; thus it's easier for the McCains and the Grahams of this world to deal with her than with most of the possible options.

There is a huge difference between being incompetent and being a soldier; I believe Susan Rice is the latter and what we need is someone who can do the job, not necessarily someone we like. I think republicans should sit this one out, wipe their noses and focus on the real issues otherwise they may be seriously punished in 2014 by an electorate that finds no alternative to the incumbent and chooses to give him yet another chance scandals notwithstanding 

A TORRID SUMMER FOR A COOL POLITICIAN

Republicans are spinning the current three scandals: Benghazi, IRS profiling on conservatives and phone tapping on journalists trying to score points; I have no doubts about that; but it also appears clear to me that the "cool guy' we hired to run this joint has proved to be just one more traditional politician dangerously close to the Nixonian era.

Would a republican president have done the same given the opportunity, of course. The problem is not one party or the other, but the impunity these bureaucrats enjoy and the latitude they have to let issues drag on until it's pointless to take any action. We don't need to impeach this president or the next one; we need to make sure they are so straight jacketed by our watchful eye that succumbing to the temptation of abusing their power becomes a non option.

The irony here is not whether this situation is unusual or not, but that it is more of the same and we chose the incumbent on the futile assumption that things would change. In my view these four, and some new storms brewing in Washington will be clumsily dodged by Mr Obama, with a little help from the main stream media, and he will end his second term uneventfully; what worries me is the balance we will make of his performance once the heated arguments give way to the cold reasoning of historians and academics. Americans may then come to the conclusion that departing from their mainly conservative ways was not wise. On the other hand the extreme left, feeling betrayed, may resort to more radical strategies in the future. We're in for a bumpy ride.
