As more information about the Cleveland kidnapping transpires we are hit with evidence of how the government and its entities repeatedly and assiduously fail us. It is always my view that no police force and no intelligence organization is in a position to block and conjure each and every attempt to hurt us; it takes also a vigilant attitude on the part of the citizenry; having said that, it is obvious that these three women were victims not only of the maniac or maniacs who abducted and tortured them for 10 years, but also of the outright negligence, incompetence and disdain of the local police.
Allegedly there were calls to the authorities reporting a naked woman chained in a yard; there was a visit by a police officer who not getting any response simply left the premises and NFAed the case; as a friend of mine wisely puts it: the officer was probably at his or her shift's end and feared that any complications would result in getting home late. There's also the decision of not including Gina de Jesus in the missing person's list despite her mother's vehement requests to the contrary. But the straw that brakes the camel's back was the 911 call made by the escaped victim and the dismissive demeanor of the dispatcher. Now some may claim that 911 gets a lot of crazy calls; point taken; that is precisely why people who work for the police enjoy the kind of benefits we give them; stress, danger, and so many other irregular situations; if they're not up to it there's the door; but oh no, they take the salaries, take the benefits, defend their perky packages with tooth and nails and even have the temerity of calling strikes when we refuse to budge to their extortionist demands.
As the pain ebbs and the joy of reunion gives way to rationality I am positive that the families will righteously sue the police, the city or what have you, and it's only fair that they receive some sort of mitigating compensation for their suffering, wasting of time and heart brake; but who will end up paying for all of that?; of course, we the people, the mayor, the police commissioner, the chief detectives, those who neglected the case and are now fishing in the Caribbean with the money we stupidly pay them certainly won't pick the tab. My question is: is that fair? should we always pay for our employees to do nothing and repeatedly screw up cases?; a poor granny drives a little above the speed limit and there you see at least two police cars, lights flashing, sirens wailing; bullying the bejesus out of the trembling lady; but when we really need them, when the shit hits the fan, they either let a suspect go or turn in the next corner to avoid trouble. These bullying fat fools do not deserve our respect. The least they could do is resign en masse and they should be forced to pay out of their pockets for any compensations granted to the victims. There must be a national outrage, we the people must demand explanations and actions, we must demand an immediate and thorough upgrade of our police all over the nation; all the rotten apples must be tossed off the bunch before it's too late. They are public servants and are there, as the writing spells in some of their cars: "to serve and protect" and not to bully and neglect. I want those involved in this case to be fired, I want their pets to be embarrassed of them, I want their dogs to refuse to look at them; their espouses to deny them sex for a year. I want them to experience at least a minor percentage of the pain, sorrow and frustration their attitude and ineptness inflicted on these three women
