AMERICA

Another debate, this time between the VPs; the pundits rush to give their verdict, and while both sides claim victory I personally believe it won't affect the final outcome. But it is part of the American democracy, part of our lives and it leads me to a thought that has been in my mind for the last few weeks: Is America fair enough?; does it really need change?; is access to the "pursuit of happiness" available and viable to all of us? are we all in a position to grab the tools to build our own destiny?. I honestly can't answer those questions with a yes or no; what I do know is that no other place that I have been to or lived in provides the "freedom" that this great nation gives to us.

Sometimes we set a goal and lay out a strategy, then, in the process we forget why and how we do what we do. All of us immigrants came here in search of a better life, and the minute we set foot on US soil we did have a better life; the fact that we are entitled to some inalienable rights and that all human beings are "technically" equal in this country is already light years away from the mess we left behind. Like any other place on earth, America needs to adapt to an ever changing world; but does this adjustment mean we must change the very fiber of the nation?. This place has come a long way; the visionaries with white wigs put us on the right path. Let's face it: this has always been a union led by a bunch of fat Caucasians that in time have been smart enough, or sometimes forced by history, to allow a reasonable degree of self criticism and dissent. In spite of shameful episodes like slavery and the segregation of black Americans, and while much is still to be done, new generations of Hispanics, Asian Americans, and African Americans (the president is an encouraging example) have joined the fat Caucasians at the helm of the most powerful nation in the history of mankind; and yet, particularly in times of elections, which have become pretty much most of our lifetime these days, we hear some people cry foul and pushing for more fairness in the US. I believe they're missing the point. The problem is not whether America is as fair, especially in terms of race equality, as it should be, but whether our country is as fair as it can be as of October 12th 2012.

There's always room for improvement, the human race is driven by the endless quest for betterment and perfection; we must be careful, however, not to follow one of those deceiving mirages that could do away with the dream come true we live in the land of the free and the home of the brave
