Israel's prime minister did it again. He was the main speaker yesterday at AIPAC in Washington, and while he threw a few backhanded compliments to president Obama the main message remained the same: Israel must have the right to defend itself.
If one looks back at history with an objective eye the facts speak by themselves; western foreign policy has been erratic and shortsighted to say the least; today's allies more often than not become enemies tomorrow making the line between foe and friend so blurred that we can't usually tell where the former ends and the latter begins. Taiwan, just to name one example; has practically been thrown under the bus to accommodate communist mainland China; therefore, the last thing the Israelis need is to allow their security become hostage of someone else's shifting priorities. For all we know, the west would not hesitate for too long to forget all about the Holocaust and its duties with the Jewish state if a new healthy partner flashes a bulging checkbook.
Netanyahu's mission is an uphill battle in a world so polarized and permeable to all things anti imperialist; the irony of it all being that his nation is the only democracy in the region; but he seems to have no choice; he's right: Israel cannot trust the west. This has been the warmest winter in years as it is; but for this combative prime minister preparations for a strike on Iran by spring has made it a very hot season
